Liverpool’s Defensive Dilemma: Van Dijk and Konate Absent for Aston Villa Clash

Liverpool is set to face Aston Villa on Sunday, but they will be missing key players due to suspension and injury. Virgil van Dijk received his first-ever red card for a professional foul against Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, and he will miss one game. However, there’s potential for a longer ban if it’s determined that he acted in dissent while leaving the pitch after a heated discussion with referee John Brooks.

On the other hand, Ibrahima Konate was absent from the game against Newcastle due to injury. Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, anticipates that Konate will remain sidelined until after the international break, but the injury is not too severe.

Liverpool’s upcoming match against Villa is their final game before the September internationals, with their next fixture scheduled against Wolves on September 16th. In the absence of Van Dijk and Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are expected to step up in the defense.

Aston Villa, led by manager Unai Emery, has had an eventful start to the season. After a disappointing 5-1 loss to Newcastle on the opening day, they’ve rebounded with impressive performances, scoring 12 goals in their last three games across different competitions. They secured a convincing 4-0 victory over Everton, followed by a 5-0 triumph against Hibs in the Europa Conference League play-off round, and a 3-1 win against Burnley.

Ahead of their visit to Anfield, Villa is set to face Hibs again in Birmingham, where they can likely afford to rest some key players, given their comfortable five-goal lead from the first leg.
